ROUND 5 INFORMATION + PREVIEW
By: Jill Davis and Chelsea Deckert
Last week, we saw the Dunmark Crushers take their first loss against the Carp in a 2-0 game. We then watched the Clippers claim their first victory over the Wasps in a 5-3 game. Will the Clippers gain their second win, or will the Crushers get back on top?
The Clippers now have an open account as they face the Dunmark Crushers who want to get back to their winning ways. Meanwhile, the Carp and Wasps are now equal at 2-2 and with just five games left, a winning record will be a requirement to make the Grand Final.
This week, we will see all players who were drafted last Friday into the Super League play for the first time Wednesday night for the fifth round of Super League. This will add an interesting twist to the league while boosting the competition.
As always, the canteen is running until 9:30 PM and the bar is open! We are about halfway through the Super League, and it’s been intriguing to say the least. We look forward to seeing how the rest of the League turns out and we hope you do too. Join us Wednesday night to see how the teams this week matchup!
This week’s match-ups:
GAME ONE: Dunmark Crushers vs the Clippers
FIRST PITCH: 6:00pm (7 innings or 2 hours)
This season so far: Last Wednesday, the Dunmark Crushers took their first loss in a tough battle against the Carp. We’ll get to see if this team as they ability to bounce back, or if the Clippers (who also got their first win last week) will be able to kick them while they’re down.
Players to Watch:
Chris Burkholder (Clippers / Glenelg): Burkholder made his debut in the Super League last week and aided the Clippers in getting their first win of the season. He had two strikeouts and picked a guy off at first in the two innings he pitched. He entered in a key moment with his team down 3-1 and the bases loaded. He got out of the jam and kept the Clippers in it before they moved forward to win.
Jordan McArdle (Clippers / Sturt): McArdle returns this week from playing in the U-23 tournament where he had outstanding performances including three homeruns. McArdle will come back as a threat to the Dunmark Crushers as they go after their second win.
Ben Andrews (Dunmark Crushers / Henley & Grange): Though the Crushers got their first loss of the season last week, Andrews has played a key part in the team’s success through the first four rounds. So far this season, he leads in homeruns, RBI’s, and is tied for second in hits. He’s also a threat in the field and is versatile in any position.
Jill and Chelsea’s Hot Tip: After seeing the Clippers get themselves on the board last week, we are confident they will be able to do it again. With Jordan McArdle back in the game, the Clippers are looking to put up a fight against the Dunmark Crushers.
Score Prediction: Clippers, 4-2
GAME TWO: JSR Plumbing Wasps vs Carp
FIRST PITCH: 8:30 pm (7 innings or 2 hours)
This season so far: The Carp are on fire as they try and head towards their third win in a row. With key players like Curtis Mead, Wilson Lee, and Angus Roeger who are consistently contributing to the team’s success, the Carp will be sure to give the JSR Plumbing Wasps a scare. This will surely be an exciting matchup as both teams are now 2-2 in the Super League.
Players to Watch:
Wilson Lee (Carp / Sturt): The Adelaide Bite pitcher racked up six strikeouts last week in just 1.2 innings pitched. When he’s not on the mound, he’s proven to be a duel threat. He now leads in strikeouts in the Super League, but Bite teammate Tom Fitzgerald isn’t far behind. Luckily, we’ll get to see these two face off this Wednesday.
Austin Gallagher (JSR Plumbing Wasps / Kensington): Gallagher has been consistent in having a big bat and been a great first baseman for the JSR Plumbing Wasps this season. You’d be a fool to ease up on him.
Jill and Chelsea’s Hot Tip: The Carp took down the undefeated Dunmark Crushers last week making the them a new threat in the league. We’d like to see the Carp keep their streak going this Wednesday and take down the JSR Plumbing Wasps
Score Prediction: Carp, 5-3
